Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Friday, 14 August 2025, paid solemn tributes to those who perished and were displaced during the Partition of India, observing Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in Gandhinagar. The day, observed annually on 14 August, was instituted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021 to honour the sacrifices of millions affected by one of modern history's largest forced migrations.

What Gujarat's Leaders Said

Chief Minister Patel, in a post on social media platform X, described the Partition as far more than the redrawing of geographical boundaries. He called it 'a dark chapter of immense pain, displacement and inhuman suffering for crores of citizens.' 'On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, I pay my humble tribute to all those who lost their lives in that horrific tragedy,' Patel said.

He also acknowledged those who endured the anguish of leaving behind their motherland, relatives, and homes, while demonstrating courage, resilience, and patience in rebuilding their lives and the nation.

Deputy CM Sanghavi issued a separate tribute, stating: 'On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, I respectfully pay tribute to the memory of millions of Indians who endured the pain of Partition and the suffering of displacement.'

The Historical Weight of Partition

The Partition of 1947 triggered one of the largest episodes of mass displacement in recorded history, as millions of people crossed the newly drawn borders between India and Pakistan amid widespread communal violence. Estimates of casualties and displacement vary considerably across historical sources, with the scale of suffering widely acknowledged as catastrophic.

Prime Minister Modi, when announcing the observance in 2021, stated that the day would commemorate the struggles and sacrifices of Partition-affected communities and serve as a reminder of the enduring need to strengthen social harmony across the country. At the national level, Modi also paid tribute on Friday to those affected by Partition, recalling the courage of victims and survivors.

Gujarat's Independence Day Preparations

The tributes come a day before India marks its 80th Independence Day on 15 August. Gujarat is simultaneously participating in the nationwide 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, running from 9 to 17 August, which aims to display the national flag at more than 70 lakh homes across the state, according to Sanghavi. More than 1,200 Tiranga Yatras have been planned across Gujarat as part of the initiative.

The government has consistently used Partition Horrors Remembrance Day to spotlight the suffering of those forced from their homes and to honour the resilience of survivors. This year's observance carries added weight as the nation prepares to celebrate eight decades of independence, drawing a direct line between the trauma of Partition and the journey of nation-building that followed.
