London, Jan 15 (NationPress) England's off-spinner Shoaib Bashir has inked a two-year agreement with Derbyshire for the 2026 season, aiming to rejuvenate his domestic career following limited chances at Somerset.

The 22-year-old, who has integrated into England's Test setup over the past two years, transitions to Derbyshire in pursuit of regular red-ball cricket. Despite claiming 68 wickets in 19 Tests since his 2024 debut, Bashir found it challenging to unseat Jack Leach at Somerset.

His scarcity of match exposure raised concerns among national selectors, especially after he was an unused squad member during the recent 2025-26 Ashes series in Australia, where England opted for all-rounder Will Jacks.

Bashir's county statistics have not reflected his international achievements. He departs Somerset with merely 21 wickets in 23 matches across all formats, averaging 74.78 in the County Championship for his 14 wickets.

Key in this recruitment was Derbyshire's head coach, Mickey Arthur, whose team finished third in Division Two last season.

"Derbyshire is undertaking an exciting project, and collaborating with Mickey Arthur, a top-tier coach, presents a fantastic opportunity. I am eager to engage in more red-ball cricket, further my development, and aim for promotion," Bashir expressed.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has played a proactive role in nurturing Bashir's growth. Following Managing Director Rob Key's advice to prioritize playing time, Bashir has traveled to Zimbabwe for a week of specialized coaching with former Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed in preparation for the upcoming season.

Bashir will enhance a spin department at Derbyshire that includes Jack Morley and Joe Hawkins, filling the gap left by Alex Thomson.

Arthur stated, "Our recruitment focuses on acquiring quality players. Bringing in a current England international is truly thrilling. He will inject significant energy and experience into our dressing room."

Point of View

Shoaib Bashir's transfer to Derbyshire is a timely and strategic move. It reflects a broader trend of players seeking optimal conditions to flourish in their careers. His commitment to growth, coupled with Derbyshire’s ambitions, signifies a promising future for both the player and the club.
