Bashir Reflects on His 4-Wicket Haul Against New Zealand, Emphasizing Wind Control

Christchurch, Nov 28 (NationPress) England spinner Shoaib Bashir disclosed that his focus was on managing his line in relation to the wind after achieving impressive bowling figures of 4-69 on the first day of the inaugural Test against New Zealand.
Bashir claimed the wickets of Rachin Ravindra (34), Tom Blundell (17), Nathan Smith (3), and Matt Henry (18), helping to limit New Zealand to 319/8 in 83 overs at the end of Day 1. Comeback player Kane Williamson was the standout performer for the home side, scoring 93 runs with 10 boundaries after being invited to bat first by Ben Stokes.
Fast bowlers Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse each took two wickets, maintaining pressure on the hosts at Hagley Oval.
"I was aware that if I got the chance to bowl, I had a responsibility to fulfill, and fortunately, I managed to control the run-rate, which was beneficial," Bashir shared on the Test Match Special podcast.
"I was bowling a bit more slowly but concentrated on controlling my line with the wind. Given the strong wind, I focused on my body mechanics to achieve the necessary line, which was outside off."
Bashir has emerged as England's primary spinner since his debut against India earlier this year. However, the 21-year-old did not perform as expected during the recent three-Test series in Pakistan, taking only nine wickets across six innings.
The young spinner acknowledged that he is still in the learning phase and relishing every moment of his international career.
"I wouldn't categorize it as disappointment, but there was some frustration during my bowling in Pakistan. Being just 21, I have a lot to learn. I'm enjoying every moment and am immensely grateful," Bashir expressed.
"I am learning as I go and am not flawless. Just two years ago, I didn't have a county. I am truly grateful for all that has transpired over the past year," he added.
