Should Siddaramaiah and His Followers Show More Modesty?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, January 6 (NationPress) In response to the celebrations by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his supporters regarding his achievement of equaling the record for the longest-serving Karnataka Chief Minister, previously held by the late D. Devaraj Urs, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Lahar Singh Siroya expressed a desire for greater modesty among them.
Taking to the social media platform X, Lahar Singh pointed out that the fact-check regarding Siddaramaiah's tenure has unveiled some critical insights.
"Recent reports have indicated that Shri Siddaramaiah has surpassed Shri D. Devaraj Urs's tenure as the longest-serving Chief Minister of Karnataka. While I extend my congratulations, I feel compelled to offer a brief fact-check.
"Shri Urs served continuously from March 1972 to January 1980. His term was uninterrupted, unlike that of Shri Siddaramaiah, who faced defeat in the 2018 elections and lost his Chamundeshwari seat in Mysore. It was only due to a narrow victory in Badami, where he contested as well, that he remained in office," Siroya remarked.
"In reference to Shri Urs, it is important to note that his extended tenure was partly due to the postponement of the 1976 elections by the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who declared a state of Emergency and imprisoned numerous opposition leaders. Even amidst President's rule in early 1978, Shri Urs maintained a continuous tenure as Chief Minister," he elaborated.
"On this occasion of surpassing Shri Urs’s record, will Shri Siddaramaiah denounce the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi? Will he criticize her for her anti-democratic actions? Will he voice disapproval for her role in displacing Shri Devaraj Urs, a champion of social justice who played a significant role in her political resurgence?" Siroya emphasized.
"It’s worth mentioning that India’s longest-serving Chief Ministers, including Pawan Kumar Chamling, Naveen Patnaik, Jyoti Basu, Mohan Lal Sukhadia, Manik Sarkar, Mamata Banerjee, and Narendra Modi, have all held their positions without interruption, each for over a decade," he noted.
"I only hope that Shri Siddaramaiah and his supporters exhibit greater modesty regarding his record, which, regrettably, does not qualify for even the Limca Book of Records or the Guinness World Records," he remarked sarcastically.
In a strong critique, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy remarked on Monday that the claim made by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah about breaking the record for the longest-serving Chief Minister deserves no celebration and should be “buried”.
Kumaraswamy responded to Siddaramaiah’s assertion about breaking the record of former Chief Minister D. Devaraj Urs, stating, “What merit does he have for all this? Considering the state’s current condition, his record deserves to be buried rather than celebrated.”
