What Differing Views on Leadership Emerge in Karnataka?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Jan 6 (NationPress) On the day when Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah matched the record of the late former Chief Minister D. Devaraja Urs for the longest-serving CM, contrasting views emerged from his supporters and those of Deputy Chief Minister and State Congress President D.K. Shivakumar regarding leadership.
Supporters of the CM asserted that running the government would be challenging without Siddaramaiah, while an MLA from the Shivakumar camp suggested that the CM should prepare the next generation of leaders, expressing confidence that Siddaramaiah would take responsible steps to ensure a smooth transition.
During a gathering in Mysuru on Tuesday, Minister for Social Welfare H.C. Mahadevappa remarked, “It is hard to envision this government without Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The Dalit community believes he should remain in power, but if leadership changes, it should be a Dalit taking the reins.”
He added, “Imagining the Congress-led government without Siddaramaiah is unfathomable. After the term concludes, we must protect the oppressed, Dalits, the poor, backward classes, and women, and Siddaramaiah will undoubtedly consider this.”
Mahadevappa emphasized, “If Siddaramaiah wanted to cater to certain interests and feudal powers, he could have achieved a different status. However, he chose not to do so.”
Meanwhile, PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi voiced his confidence in Siddaramaiah completing his full term, stating, “Confusions are typical in a national party like Congress. The party possesses the strength to resolve such issues and progress. I commend Siddaramaiah for equalling the record of the late D. Devaraja Urs.”
Both Ministers Satish Jarkiholi and H.C. Mahadevappa, who are firm supporters of Siddaramaiah, hail from marginalized communities.
Senior MLA H.C. Balakrishna, a supporter of Shivakumar, stated, “Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has expressed confidence in completing his term, although he has not guaranteed it. He has already set a record as the longest-serving CM. The decision about succession lies with the high command and Siddaramaiah.”
He continued, “As one generation steps back, it is essential to elevate the younger generation. The Congress party must also thrive in the future. Just like elders in a family pave the way for their children, this transition will occur. This does not imply I am urging him to step down. The party has supported him, and he will ensure the party's endurance and growth in the state.”
“I have faith in this. Siddaramaiah is not the type to neglect his responsibilities. He will act judiciously and guide matters forward seamlessly,” Balakrishna affirmed.
