Gangtok, July 18 (NationPress) On Friday, the political atmosphere in Sikkim became tense due to an incident involving a violent confrontation among members of the Citizen Action Party (CAP). This altercation occurred near the Sadar Police Station late on Thursday night.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has vehemently condemned the event, labeling it as yet another instance of failure in maintaining law and order within the state.
BJP spokesperson Passang Gyali Sherpa expressed serious alarm regarding the alleged assault, which witnesses assert took place either within or in close proximity to the police station.
“It is extremely regrettable that such an event unfolded in the center of Gangtok, right under police surveillance,” Sherpa remarked to journalists on Friday.
He noted that the BJP had notified the Central government and was directed to compile a comprehensive report. Sherpa criticized the police for their inaction, pointing out that no arrests had occurred even a full day after the event.
“Rather than accepting responsibility, they are deflecting blame toward the CAP members who had approached the Vigilance Department,” he stated.
“The police’s lack of prompt action raises significant concerns.”
While opposition figures and witnesses assert that the confrontation transpired inside the police station, authorities assert that it happened outside. Sherpa is pressing for transparency, urging the police to disclose CCTV footage from the incident. “Until the footage is released, it seems the police may be hiding the truth,” he claimed.
CAP leader Tikaram Sharma, who was taken into custody that night, alleged that the violence was premeditated. He explained that a CAP group had visited the Vigilance Department as part of a planned initiative to advocate for administrative reforms.
“We were peacefully surrendering at the police station when disorder ensued, appearing to be orchestrated,” Sharma alleged. He accused the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) of cultivating a climate of impunity.
“The Chief Minister’s recent comments indicate a dismissal of democratic principles, encouraging such violence,” Sharma contended. He questioned the police's delayed response, implying collusion with the aggressors. “If they truly aimed to avert violence, they would have detained everyone involved immediately. Their inaction speaks volumes,” he stated.
As tensions rise, calls for accountability intensify, with opposition parties and civil society demanding a thorough inquiry into this incident.
