Key Takeaways
Thrissur, Nov 4 (NationPress) The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Kerala commenced on Tuesday morning with a meaningful visit by Thrissur Sub-Collector Akhil V. Menon to the home of Kathakali icon Kalamandalam Gopi.
Widely known as Gopi Asan, the 88-year-old maestro stands as one of India’s most distinguished practitioners of Kathakali, honored with the Padma Shri for his significant contributions to art and culture.
Menon, along with a team of officials, visited the esteemed artist at his residence in the early hours of Tuesday to ensure his registration under the SIR initiative.
Gopi Asan, visibly delighted, expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the visit. “I would have preferred to go to the Sub-Collector’s office myself, but age has slowed me down. I am deeply moved that the officials came to my home to assist my enrollment,” he remarked.
Sub-Collector Menon emphasized that the visit was both an honor and a privilege.
“We are incredibly proud to have met Gopi Asan and to have completed his enrollment formalities at his residence. It’s a moment of pride for us as public officials,” he mentioned.
The month-long SIR initiative, which will extend until December 4, seeks to update and verify the electoral rolls across the state.
Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have initiated visits to households throughout Kerala to confirm voter information, distribute essential forms, and ensure that all eligible citizens are accurately recorded.
In a unique effort, District Collectors and senior officials are personally visiting the residences of notable citizens and VVIPs to confirm their entries in the voter database.
Earlier, the Chief Electoral Officer of Kerala stated on its X handle, "From today onwards, BLOs will visit your homes. Join us in the endeavor of strengthening democracy".
The Election Commission of India has indicated that this exercise is a routine yet crucial measure to uphold transparency and ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
However, the SIR initiative has faced opposition from both the CPI(M) and Congress, who have raised concerns regarding its timing and potential irregularities.
The ECI has reaffirmed that the revision is essential for ensuring a comprehensive and accurate voter list ahead of upcoming elections.
Upon completion, this process will yield a fully updated electoral roll for Kerala.
