What Are the Diverging Views of Kerala Guv and Priyanka Gandhi on Voter List Revision?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 30 (NationPress) Kerala Governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar on Thursday urged complete public engagement with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters’ list. This comes as AICC general secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi criticized the initiative, claiming it might lead to manipulation of electoral rolls.
During the inauguration of the SIR process at Raj Bhavan, Governor Arlekar called on officials to ensure that all eligible individuals in the state are accounted for in the updated list.
“Every eligible individual should have the opportunity to vote. The updated electoral roll must be comprehensive, in addition to being precise and inclusive,” he stated.
The Governor encouraged the populace to “fully support and engage” with the voter revision initiative, promising all necessary assistance from Raj Bhavan to electoral officials. Arlekar highlighted that both precision and inclusivity are crucial for the integrity of democracy.
“The foundation of free and fair elections starts with a reliable voters’ list,” he noted.
Chief Electoral Officer Ratan U. Kelkar updated the Governor on the SIR processes, including verification and the application of technology to eliminate duplication.
Present at the event were Additional Chief Electoral Officers Sharmila C. and Krishnadasan P., Joint Chief Electoral Officer Rusi R. S., Electoral Registration Officer Madhu, and Booth Level Officer Benazir.
Conversely, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi, during her tour of her constituency, took a strong stance against the SIR, asserting that the revision was politically charged and lacked transparency.
She warned that this process could be exploited to sway the voter base ahead of upcoming elections and called for enhanced oversight to avert manipulation.
While the Governor characterized the SIR as a crucial measure to bolster democracy, Priyanka Gandhi cautioned that it might undermine public trust if executed without accountability.
The Election Commission has clarified that the special revision being carried out in Kerala and 11 other states aims to provide error-free electoral rolls before the subsequent elections.
