Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 8 (NationPress) - The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Kerala, Rathan U. Kelkar, firmly rejected media claims regarding the extensive exclusion of voters from the electoral rolls, emphasizing the Election Commission's unwavering dedication to ensuring free and fair elections while including every eligible voter.
In a statement shared via the official X account of the CEO, Kelkar cautioned the media against spreading misinformation that might incite unfounded fears among citizens during the ongoing electoral roll revision.
He pointed out that misleading reports could diminish public trust in the electoral system at this crucial time.
"The Election Commission is determined to include every eligible citizen in the electoral roll," the CEO stated, highlighting that strong procedural safeguards are in place to avoid disenfranchisement.
Kelkar urged media outlets to maintain accuracy and restraint, warning that speculative narratives could misrepresent the objectives of routine administrative tasks mandated by election law.
Regarding deadlines for submitting enumeration forms, the CEO clarified that voters who miss the deadline are not automatically removed from the rolls.
These voters can submit Form 6 along with the required declaration during the claims and objections period, scheduled from December 23, 2025, to January 22, 2026.
This clarification comes amid heightened political sensitivity leading up to the Assembly elections, with claims circulating on social media that procedural delays, documentation gaps, or enumeration issues might result in the removal of names from the voter list.
Election officials maintain that the claims and objections period exists specifically to resolve such issues and rectify any omissions, mistakes, or wrongful exclusions.
Official statistics reveal that the draft electoral roll published on December 23 included over 2.54 crore voters statewide, comprising approximately 1.3 crore women, 1.23 crore men, and 280 transgender voters.
However, the release of the draft roll also indicated that 24.08 lakh names had been removed, prompting significant reactions and criticism from various political parties.
Election Commission officials reported that since the draft roll's publication, around 2.18 lakh applications for name inclusion have already been registered, showcasing active public participation in the revision process.
