Bengaluru, Sep 24 (NationPress) Tributes have been flooding in following the passing of Kannada literary legend S.L. Bhyrappa, who left us on Wednesday at a Bengaluru hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda expressed his sorrow, stating, "I am deeply saddened to learn of the demise of Dr S. L. Bhyrappa, a monumental figure in Kannada literature, and a recipient of the Saraswati Samman and the Padma Bhushan. His contributions to Kannada literature through exceptional novels have touched the hearts of countless readers. His loss is an irreversible blow to the literary community. May his soul rest in peace. I stand in solidarity with his family and admirers."

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah remarked, "The news of the passing of senior Kannada litterateur S. L. Bhyrappa brings profound sorrow. I pray for peace for his soul. His engaging writing style captivated a vast audience, and his departure leaves a void in the literary landscape. My condolences to his family and readers."

Union Minister for Food, Public Distribution, and Consumer Affairs, Pralhad Joshi, expressed his condolences, stating, "The loss of Dr S. L. Bhyrappa, an eminent writer and Padma Bhushan awardee, renowned for bringing the prestigious Saraswati Samman to Kannada literature, has caused immense grief."

Minister Joshi reminisced about how Bhyrappa, through extensive research and deep historical analysis, crafted significant literature for the Kannada literary scene. He highlighted that Bhyrappa's profound literary contributions were rooted in strong nationalist ideals and critical insight, shared with the entire nation.

Bhyrappa’s novels have been translated into numerous languages, achieving remarkable acclaim, which underscores his extraordinary talent. Joshi added that the Kannada literary community is poorer without Bhyrappa and prayed for divine strength for his family and admirers in this time of sorrow.

Deputy Chief Minister and State Congress President D.K. Shivakumar commented, "It is with great sorrow that I acknowledge the passing of Dr S. L. Bhyrappa, one of Kannada’s most celebrated novelists, Padma Bhushan recipient, and the first to bring the prestigious Saraswati Samman award to Kannada literature. The Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, R. Ashoka, mentioned, "With the passing of esteemed litterateur, Saraswati Samman and Padma Bhushan recipient Dr S. L. Bhyrappa, Kannada literature has lost a priceless gem. His novels enriched the Kannada literary tradition and, through translations, earned him countless readers across diverse languages in India. Santeshivara Lingannaiah Bhyrappa, widely known as S.L. Bhyrappa, was among the most revered and influential novelists in contemporary Indian literature. Born in 1931 in Karnataka's Hassan district, he became a prominent figure in Kannada literature, noted for his deep philosophical insights, historical perspectives, and bold examination of social themes.

Over a literary career spanning over six decades, Bhyrappa authored more than 25 novels, many of which have been translated into various Indian and foreign languages. His celebrated works, including 'Vamshavriksha', 'Parva', 'Tantu', 'Saartha', and 'Uttarakaanda', have captivated readers not only in Karnataka but also across the globe. Notably, his work 'Parva' has undergone 17 publications.

His writing is recognized for its research-based authenticity, vivid characters, and ability to provoke critical thought on a range of issues, including morality, religion, philosophy, and the complexities of human relationships.

Bhyrappa received some of the nation's highest literary and civilian accolades, including the esteemed Saraswati Samman and the Padma Bhushan. His novel 'Vamshavriksha' was adapted into a National Award-winning film, further solidifying his legacy in Indian cultural history.
