Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren suffered a significant legal setback on Monday, 8 June, after a PMLA special court in Ranchi dismissed his discharge petition in a money laundering case tied to the alleged illegal acquisition of 8.86 acres of land in the Shanti Nagar area of Badgai, Ranchi. The court ruled that sufficient grounds exist on the basis of available records and allegations to proceed with the case, and that the accused cannot be discharged at this stage.

The Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) special court had reserved its order after hearing arguments from both sides before delivering its verdict on Monday. In its ruling, the court found the material on record adequate to warrant continuation of proceedings against Soren, effectively clearing the path for the case to move toward trial.

The discharge petition had been filed by Soren on 5 December 2025, in which he contended that the allegations were baseless, that he had been unnecessarily implicated, and that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) lacked concrete evidence to justify prosecution.

ED's Stand and Investigation Background

The Enforcement Directorate, which is investigating the case, opposed the discharge plea, arguing that evidence and documents gathered during the probe were sufficient to proceed to trial. The ED had named Soren as an accused based on its findings into the alleged illegal acquisition of the 8.86-acre plot and associated money laundering charges.

Notably, the ED had conducted multiple raids and summoned Soren on ten separate occasions for interrogation in connection with this matter.

The Arrest and Political Fallout

This is the same case that led to Soren's arrest in March 2024 — a development that triggered significant political upheaval in Jharkhand. Following his arrest, Champai Soren, who has since joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had assumed the office of Chief Minister. Hemant Soren was subsequently released on bail and returned to power.

The Monday ruling marks the third major legal development in this case since the arrest, and comes as Soren continues to lead the Jharkhand government.

With the discharge plea dismissed, the case will now advance through the judicial process and may proceed toward trial.
