Kolkata, Sep 18 (NationPress) The working committee of South Calcutta Law College (New Campus) in Kasba, which gained notoriety earlier this year due to the rape of a student on its grounds, has on Thursday declined to accept the resignation of Vice-Principal Noyna Chatterjee.
Following extensive criticism regarding her management following the incident, Chatterjee submitted her resignation earlier this week. An emergency meeting of the college's working committee was called on Thursday to discuss whether to accept her resignation.
After deliberation, the committee members decided not to accept her resignation and encouraged her to remain in her position for a while longer. The President of the Working Committee and Trinamool Congress legislator Ashok Kumar Deb specifically urged Chatterjee to stay, which she agreed to, as revealed by an insider familiar with the meeting.
During the meeting, it was highlighted that the name of the main suspect in the rape case, Monojit Mishra, a former student and contractual employee, remained visible in various graffiti across the college campus, due to his previous role as a students’ union leader.
It was decided that these graffiti would be removed only after the college reopened following the upcoming festival break.
While Mishra was identified as the chief perpetrator of the rape and murder, two other individuals, Jaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, who were also students at the time, were recognized as accomplices in the crime.
Mishra was reportedly influential and had connections with several prominent leaders of the ruling party in the state, according to other students.
The two other accused were also noted for their active roles in the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the Trinamool Congress.
Following the rape incident, the Vice-Principal’s actions came under scrutiny from both media and investigators for allegedly disregarding the criminal background of the prime suspect, Mishra, when hiring him and permitting him to access various rooms within the college as if they were his own.
Numerous questions arose regarding Chatterjee's interactions with the accused on the day of the incident.
