Munich/Seoul, Feb 15 (NationPress) The leading diplomats from South Korea and the United States engaged in their first bilateral meeting on Saturday since the commencement of Donald Trump's second administration, focusing on the bilateral alliance, North Korea, and Trump's tariff strategies.

Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the Munich Security Conference, as South Korea aims to maintain a stable relationship with the new Trump administration, which is implementing aggressive tariff measures while its strategy towards North Korea remains ambiguous, according to Yonhap news agency.

The discussions came at a crucial time when Seoul is striving to sustain its diplomatic engagements following the alarming martial law attempt by the recently impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol last December.

Trump's proposals to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum, as well as potential tariffs on vehicles and chips, necessitate prompt coordination with Washington amid fears that South Korea might be the next target of Trump's trade policies.

South Korea's foreign ministry previously stated that bilateral economic cooperation would be a primary topic during their discussions, in addition to North Korean nuclear challenges and trilateral collaboration with Japan.

Cho expressed his intent to find solutions regarding the Trump administration's planned and possible tariffs on South Korea during his talks with Rubio. He noted that discussions would encompass strategic cooperation in sectors like shipbuilding, nuclear energy, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence.

Cho emphasized his aim to showcase the significance of South Korea's contributions to the alliance and how they align with Trump's vision to make America great again.
