Seoul, June 11 (NationPress) South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has mandated the cessation of loudspeaker broadcasts directed towards North Korea along the border, as part of efforts to alleviate tensions and foster trust, according to a statement from the presidential office on Wednesday.

Shortly before this announcement, the military confirmed it had ceased its anti-Pyongyang broadcasts. This halt comes a year after the military had resumed these broadcasts in June of the previous year, responding to North Korea's frequent launches of balloon propaganda across the heavily fortified border.

"The president has instructed military officials to terminate the loudspeaker transmissions aimed at North Korea at 2 p.m. today," reported presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung.

"This action demonstrates the government's dedication to restoring trust in inter-Korean relations and fostering peace on the Korean Peninsula," she added.

The suspension of the broadcasts was one of Lee's campaign promises regarding inter-Korean relations before his election victory on June 3. As a candidate, he also pledged to halt the dispatch of anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border.

As President, Lee has expressed his intent to enhance relations with the North, despite the strained ties following Pyongyang's severing of relations and its designation of Seoul as its primary adversary.

"This initiative aims to reduce tensions, especially in light of the lack of significant provocations from the North recently," Kang explained. "It is designed to decrease military confrontations between the two Koreas and to pave the way for rebuilding mutual trust."

Kang characterized this decision as a "practical step" to mitigate the distress faced by residents in border areas who have been affected by the noise.

Under the prior government of Yoon Suk Yeol, the military had resumed loudspeaker transmissions for the first time in six years, reflecting a hardline stance towards the North, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

In contrast to the previous administration's position, the unification ministry, responsible for inter-Korean affairs, expressed regret earlier this week over anti-Pyongyang leafleting by a group of abductee families, emphasizing the need to cultivate peace and ensure public safety.
