Seoul, Nov 21 (NationPress) In a significant move, the South Korean defence and foreign ministries established their own task forces on Friday to look into the alleged involvement of military and ministry officials in the martial law attempt initiated by former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol in December of last year.
This action follows the establishment of an interagency task force by the office of Prime Minister Kim Min-seok earlier this week, aimed at investigating if public officials from 49 central government agencies participated in any unlawful activities or misconduct related to Yoon's martial law declaration.
The defence and foreign ministries are part of a total of 12 key agencies undergoing rigorous examination.
The defence ministry disclosed that its task force, led by Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-back, will include around 50 personnel, comprising members of the inspection bureau and external experts.
Additionally, the ministry will set up a hotline and an email channel for the public to provide tips.
Moreover, the ministry announced that it will soon release the findings from an independent investigation conducted on military units that were mobilized for the martial law operations since August.
Separately, the foreign ministry confirmed the formation of its task force, chaired by Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, which will be active from Monday through January 30, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
The ministry is committed to conducting the investigation in a transparent and diligent manner, adhering to due procedures, and it will accept complaints regarding the investigation until December 12.
The 2024 South Korean martial law crisis was a political upheaval triggered by President Yoon Suk Yeol's announcement of martial law. On December 3, 2024, Yoon declared martial law during a televised address. Although it was revoked the following day, it sparked public outrage, mass protests, and swift legislative action that ultimately led to his impeachment.
On January 15, South Korea witnessed the arrest of impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol.
