Seoul, March 16 (NationPress) - The South Korean Unification Minister, Chung Dong-young, urged North Korea on Monday to seize the opportunity for resuming talks with the United States, especially after President Donald Trump showed interest in engaging with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

"The government's stance on a North Korea-US summit is not contingent upon probabilities; rather, it is our belief that such a meeting is essential," Chung informed the press.

"I sincerely hope North Korea does not overlook this chance (for dialogue with Trump) spurred by the President's recent expressions of interest," he added.

Chung's comments followed Trump's reiteration of his willingness to meet Kim again, during a discussion with South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok in Washington last Friday.

"He also inquired about my perspective, mentioning his curiosity regarding whether Chairman Kim has an interest in engaging with both the US and Trump," the prime minister recounted, with Trump commenting, "Meeting (Kim) is a positive step."

Trump is scheduled to travel to China from late March to early April for discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, leading to speculation that he might look to renew summit conversations with Kim during this trip.

The Unification Minister characterized the revival of North Korea-US summit discussions as both "necessary" and "mutually advantageous" for the nations involved, especially as Pyongyang seeks to secure its development and national security while Washington looks to maintain stability on the Korean Peninsula, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

He emphasized that this process is vital for the current and future stability of South Korea.

North Korea has shown a general interest in resuming discussions with the US, with leader Kim stating in last month's party congress that there is no reason for the country not to get along with Washington, although he insists that the US must first abandon its hostile policies.

Chung noted that Trump seems to exhibit a "strong willingness" to meet Kim, suggesting that Trump's comments to the prime minister might indicate a query about whether Kim is likewise interested in such a meeting, particularly after Trump faced embarrassment for not meeting Kim during his last visit to South Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

However, the minister mentioned that, to his knowledge, there has been no direct communication established between Pyongyang and Washington regarding the restoration of dialogue.

Point of View

The recent statements by South Korea's Unification Minister underscore the critical need for diplomatic engagement between North Korea and the United States. As regional stability hangs in the balance, fostering communication through dialogue could be essential for future security and development.
