Senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and former Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, Ram Govind Chaudhary, passed away on Friday, 26 September 2026, at the age of 73 while undergoing treatment at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow. His death has sent shockwaves through political circles in Uttar Pradesh, with leaders across party lines rushing to pay their tributes.

Akhilesh Yadav Pays Last Respects

SP President Akhilesh Yadav visited Metro City Apartments in Nishatganj, Lucknow, on Saturday and placed the Samajwadi Party flag on Chaudhary's body. Akhilesh appeared visibly emotional during the visit and described the loss as deeply personal to the socialist movement. “Ram Govind Chaudhary was a leader of the socialist movement and belonged to the generation when socialism was establishing its identity in the early days,” he said.

The SP President added, “He was a very effective voice. His demise has been a loss to the socialist movement. The Samajwadi Party has suffered a huge loss. All of us socialists stand with his family in this hour of grief.”

Tributes Pour In Across Party Lines

The condolences were not confined to the SP. UP Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh visited Chaudhary’s residence to pay his respects, as did a steady stream of political leaders, supporters and acquaintances. A pall of mourning prevailed at the residence throughout the day.

Ketki Singh, BJP MLA from Bansdih in Ballia, called Chaudhary’s death an irreparable loss for the entire region and for Uttar Pradesh. Despite ideological differences, she said he had been “like a guardian” to her in politics and that his contributions to public service, grassroots struggles and socialist ideology would always be remembered.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh also paid tribute, noting: “Ram Govind Chaudhary belonged to Baghi Ballia, a strong political centre known across the country as a hub of socialist politics, from where Chandra Shekhar Ji emerged. As the state president of the Samajwadi Party, a minister in the Akhilesh Yadav government and an eight-time MLA from Ballia, his contributions have been exemplary.” Singh offered condolences on behalf of the Aam Aadmi Party, Arvind Kejriwal, and his colleagues.

A Political Career Spanning Five Decades

Chaudhary’s political journey began in student politics in Ballia district, one of Uttar Pradesh’s most storied political belts. He first entered the Uttar Pradesh Assembly by winning the Chilkhar Assembly seat in the 1977 elections. Over the following decades, he won the assembly seat a remarkable eight times in total, becoming one of the most recognisable faces of socialist politics in Purvanchal.

Between 1990 and 1991, he served as Minister of Horticulture and Food Processing in the Mulayam Singh Yadav-led government. After winning the 2012 Assembly elections from Bansdih, he was entrusted with the Basic Education and Social Welfare portfolios in the Akhilesh Yadav-led government. In the 2017 elections, Chaudhary retained Bansdih and was appointed Leader of the Opposition in the UP Legislative Assembly, a position he held until 2022. He also served as National Secretary of the SP.

Loss for Purvanchal and the Socialist Movement

Chaudhary’s passing marks the end of an era for Purvanchal’s socialist politics. He was among the last prominent links to the ideological tradition that produced figures such as Chandra Shekhar and Mulayam Singh Yadav in the region. His five-decade career bridged the foundational years of the socialist movement and its modern organisational form within the SP. The party has not yet announced formal arrangements for his funeral or a successor structure in his constituency.
