Sri Lanka Takes Charge of Iranian Ship Operations Amid Conflict
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Colombo, March 6 (NationPress) Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced that his administration has assumed control of operations related to the Iranian vessel IRIS Bushehr and its crew, adhering to international conventions as a neutral nation. This decision comes as authorities work to safely bring the crew to shore while relocating the ship from the country's primary commercial harbor.
The IRIS Bushehr, an Iranian naval ship, participated in the 2026 International Fleet Review—a collaborative maritime exercise held in India—alongside the IRIS Dena, which tragically sank off the southern coast of Sri Lanka following an attack by a US submarine on Wednesday, as reported by Xinhua.
During a news conference, Dissanayake revealed that the IRIS Bushehr made a formal request to Sri Lanka's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 4, seeking permission to dock at a Sri Lankan port.
He emphasized that Sri Lanka, which prioritizes humanitarian principles, is managing this situation in accordance with its international commitments, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Describing this as a non-routine situation due to the vessel's affiliation with a party in an ongoing conflict, Dissanayake stated that continuous discussions were held with the ship's captain, crew, and the Iranian Embassy. It was ultimately decided to place the vessel and its personnel under Sri Lanka's care, following established protocols.
The government opted not to dock the ship in the Port of Colombo due to commercial considerations. Instead, the crew will be transferred to Colombo via naval vessels, and the ship will be moved to the Trincomalee Port area in the eastern region of the country.
Dissanayake further shared that the crew members being brought ashore include 53 officers, 84 cadet officers, 48 senior sailors, and 21 sailors. After undergoing medical assessments and registration, they will be accommodated at the Welisara Navy Camp located in Sri Lanka's Western Province.
Following the crew's evacuation, a joint team consisting of Sri Lankan naval personnel and 42 members from the ship's crew will navigate the vessel to the Trincomalee area, he added.
