IPL 2026: Uncertainty Surrounds Mitchell Starc's Arrival, Says DC Bowling Coach Munaf Patel
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 7 (NationPress) - Delhi Capitals (DC) bowling coach Munaf Patel mentioned that there remains uncertainty regarding the arrival of Mitchell Starc, the Australian left-arm fast bowler, for IPL 2026. This comes despite the Axar Patel-led team securing victories in both of their matches without his presence.
Prior to the start of the IPL 2026 season, DC had announced that they were waiting for clarification regarding the NoC for Starc, who is expected to miss the initial matches due to Cricket Australia (CA) managing his workload in light of the international cricket calendar. However, recent reports indicate that Starc is currently in recovery from shoulder and elbow injuries.
"I inquire daily about his expected arrival and the specifics since he is crucial for us as a primary bowler. I share the same question every day. Currently, there is no update on his arrival, as it will depend on the Australian board, his physiotherapist, or trainer," Munaf stated during a press conference on Tuesday.
DC has triumphed in both of their matches this season in Starc's absence and is aiming for a third consecutive win against the winless Gujarat Titans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday.
Munaf, who was part of India's 2011 Men's ODI World Cup-winning squad, emphasized Starc's significance in the IPL, comparing him to India's leading pacer Jasprit Bumrah.
"We have had two wins, so it doesn't feel like we're missing Starc right now. However, if he doesn't perform upon his return, it could change perspectives. People are not thinking of him much now because we are winning, but he is undoubtedly one of the best bowlers globally. His absence is felt less in victories," he elaborated.
"However, a top bowler is still a top bowler. I believe there is no more formidable bowler in the IPL than Starc, aside from Bumrah, considering his vast experience and ability to bowl fast while swinging the new ball. Winning matches without him does not diminish his value," he concluded.
