Berlin, Sep 26 (NationPress) VfB Stuttgart kicked off their Europa League journey with a 2-1 victory against Celta Vigo at home. The visitors almost took the lead early on when a misplayed pass from goalkeeper Alexander Nubel provided Iago Aspas with an opportunity, but the striker's volley went over the unguarded net in the third minute. Stuttgart quickly regained control, with Chema Andres forcing Ionut Radu into a save, and Jamie Leweling missing the follow-up, while Lorenz Assignon also tested the keeper from long range.

The first goal came shortly after halftime; a long clearance from Nubel found Badredine Bouanani, who chipped the ball over the advancing Radu, marking his first goal in Stuttgart colors.

Stuttgart extended their lead midway through the second half, as Bilateral El Khannouss scored from the edge of the box after a clever combination with Angelo Stiller from a short corner.

Despite Vigo's heavy rotation from their domestic squad, they found the net late when Borja Iglesias scored in the 86th minute, making for a tense conclusion.

The hosts managed to hold on for the three points in their opening group match.

“We played exceptionally well for roughly 85 minutes. Things got a bit tense towards the end, but it was a solid start overall. We can definitely improve, particularly in front of goal. Ultimately, securing the win allows us to build on this momentum,” said Leweling.

Head coach Sebastian Hoeneb remarked, “We’re pleased with the win, which we fully earned. For 85 minutes, we were the superior side, playing with high intensity and winning many duels. In the second half, we generated more chances in critical areas and netted two goals. Making it 2-0 was crucial. This victory is another positive step forward.”
