Swiss envoy Maya Tissafi: Kashmir mountains 'wonderfully familiar' to Switzerland
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Swiss Ambassador to India and Bhutan Maya Tissafi on Thursday, 28 May described Kashmir's mountains as feeling 'wonderfully familiar' to a Swiss national, as she wrapped up a high-level visit to Srinagar that included discussions on development priorities and bilateral collaboration opportunities.
What the Ambassador Said
In a post on X, Tissafi wrote: 'The breathtaking mountains of #Kashmir feel wonderfully familiar to a Swiss. In #Srinagar, I had insightful discussions with Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo and former Minister Sajad Lone on the region's development priorities and future opportunities.'
She added that Swiss expertise is already contributing to Kashmir's growth — spanning infrastructure projects, hydropower technology, high-altitude climate studies, and dairy farming. The ambassador also flagged fresh areas for future collaboration, including vocational training, hospitality, food processing, and tourism.
Key Meetings in Srinagar
Tissafi held discussions with Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo and Peoples Conference (PC) president and MLA Sajad Lone during her Srinagar visit. Lone's office confirmed the meeting on his own X page, noting that the two 'exchanged views on various issues' and that Media Secretary Danish Iqbal was also present.
Tissafi also visited the historic Nishat Garden, calling it 'a memorable introduction to the spirit of Kashmir.'
Swiss Expertise Already at Work in Kashmir
According to Tissafi, Swiss technical know-how is already embedded in several sectors in the region. Hydropower technology and high-altitude climate research are among the areas where Switzerland has an active footprint, given its own expertise in Alpine environments — terrain that shares geographic parallels with Jammu and Kashmir.
Dairy farming is another sector where Swiss collaboration is reportedly underway, leveraging Switzerland's globally recognised agricultural methods in mountain ecosystems.
