Chennai, Nov 9 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu is poised to launch a groundbreaking initiative focused on women's health, specifically targeting the early detection and prevention of cancer throughout the state.
The Health and Family Welfare Minister, Ma Subramanian, unveiled the 'Women Wellness in Week' (WWW) project on Sunday, an ambitious undertaking with an allocation of Rs 41-crore. This initiative aims to provide breast and cervical cancer screenings directly at the doorsteps of women across every district.
Set to commence within the next ten days, the program will utilize specially designed mobile medical units to establish dedicated cancer screening camps for women across all districts. These mobile units will come equipped with advanced diagnostic tools and staffed by trained healthcare professionals, ensuring early detection, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where access to preventive healthcare is often limited.
During the announcement at an event associated with the Chief Minister's Girl Child Protection Scheme in Saidapet, Subramanian emphasized the government's commitment to making healthcare accessible and fair for all women.
"Each district will feature one dedicated vehicle that will travel to various localities to conduct screenings for breast and cervical cancer. This initiative is particularly aimed at reaching those who may struggle to visit hospitals for regular check-ups," he stated.
In addition, the Minister disclosed plans for a free vaccination campaign against Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a significant contributor to cervical cancer, aimed at all girls under 14 years old.
The Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC) has already initiated the process for vaccine procurement.
"Once the supply is confirmed, vaccinations will be administered through government schools and primary health centers," he added.
During the event in Saidapet, the Minister also distributed maturity deposits and savings bonds to beneficiaries under the Girl Child Protection Scheme, further affirming the government's dedication to empowering women through health, education, and financial inclusion.
On the wider public health front, Subramanian mentioned that dengue cases are currently under control in Tamil Nadu, thanks to ongoing vector-control initiatives by local authorities.
"Preventive strategies have significantly lowered dengue-related fatalities. We have urged civic officials to persist in rigorous mosquito eradication efforts," he remarked.
The WWW project is part of a broader vision to enhance women's health outcomes through early intervention, preventive care, and community outreach, positioning Tamil Nadu as a national leader in public health innovation.
