Tamil Nadu Launches Crop Damage Assessment Following Unseasonal Hailstorms
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 22 (NationPress) Unseasonal hailstorms, coupled with strong winds and rain, have wreaked havoc on crops in various districts of Tamil Nadu, leading the state government to launch a comprehensive assessment initiative.
Officials revealed that over 850 hectares of agricultural land have been affected, raising alarm among farmers regarding possible income losses. The districts hit hardest include Madurai, Salem, and Tenkasi, where hailstorms have impacted crops across approximately 810 hectares.
Crops including paddy, cotton, sugarcane, oilseeds, and millets have experienced significant damage, particularly as many were at advanced growth stages. Farmers have voiced their concerns about the timing of the storm, as several paddy fields were close to harvest when the hail struck.
The unexpected weather has led to crop lodging, grain destruction, and diminished yield expectations, which could severely impact market returns.
Additionally, horticultural crops have also faced damage due to strong winds and sporadic rain in regions such as Coimbatore, Dindigul, Erode, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, Salem, and Tirupur. Estimates suggest that around 40 hectares of fruit and vegetable farming have been affected, with visible destruction, including uprooted plants and broken branches.
In light of these events, the Tamil Nadu government has instructed officials from the Revenue and Agriculture departments to perform joint inspections in the impacted areas.
Teams have commenced visits to villages to assess crop conditions and collect data directly from farmers.
Authorities noted that the ongoing survey aims to accurately determine the extent of losses and ensure that affected farmers receive necessary support.
The results will be compiled into detailed district-wise reports, guiding the government in finalizing relief measures and compensation packages.
Officials emphasized that prompt action is being taken to complete the assessment so that assistance can be provided swiftly, aiding farmers in recovering from this unforeseen setback.
