New Delhi, Sep 18 (NationPress) Congress leader Tariq Anwar on Thursday expressed his strong support for the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, regarding his allegations against the Election Commission of India (ECI). Anwar stated that the election body seems to be favoring the ruling BJP amidst the ongoing controversy about alleged voter manipulation in Karnataka’s Aland constituency.
In response to Rahul Gandhi's press conference earlier that day, Anwar told IANS, “Those who engage in theft will never admit their mistakes. The way Rahul Gandhi has highlighted this issue publicly indicates that the ECI is colluding. He has provided ample documentation to support his claims during his press conference. While the ECI offers clarifications, it should also commence a thorough investigation.”
When questioned about the BJP leaders' suggestion that LoP Gandhi should take legal action if he possesses evidence, the experienced Congress leader retorted, “Why does the BJP constantly feel the need to act as the spokesperson for the ECI? This matter is between the Congress, the Opposition, and the ECI. The BJP's persistent defense of the ECI only underscores the connection between them.”
On the topic of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, Anwar emphasized that the Congress is not opposed to the initiative itself but to the way it has been executed.
“We are not against SIR. Our concern lies with the methodology. In Bihar, the SIR was conducted hastily. Citizens were not given sufficient time, indicating the Election Commission's rush. We support SIR nationwide, but it must be implemented with public trust. Political parties, especially the Opposition, should be consulted and involved,” he remarked.
Anwar’s comments arise amidst intensifying political tension between the BJP and Congress over electoral roll updates and LoP Gandhi's serious accusations of “vote theft” in Karnataka.
