Dubai, May 7 (NationPress) Bangladesh is optimistic that their pace spearhead Taskin Ahmed will return to the international cricket scene during the highly anticipated multi-format series in Sri Lanka, which kicks off in June. The tour's centerpiece will be the two-match Test series, a part of the new ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, with the inaugural game set for June 17 in Galle.
Taskin, aged 30, has been out of action due to an Achilles tendon injury, having missed Bangladesh's recent home Test series against Zimbabwe. However, a recent consultation with specialists in London has brought encouraging news for both the team and its supporters. Taskin has successfully avoided surgery, with doctors recommending a conservative rehabilitation plan instead.
“The specialists have determined that a conservative, non-surgical route is the most suitable for Taskin at this juncture,” stated Dr. Debashish Chowdhury, the senior team physician of Bangladesh, as reported by ICC. “The rehabilitation program is specifically designed to gradually restore his fitness and effectively manage the tendon issue. We are hopeful about his progress.”
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is optimistic that Taskin will achieve full match fitness by early June. Although he will not participate in the upcoming white-ball series against the UAE and Pakistan, the team is confident he will be prepared to face Sri Lanka in the Tests.
Taskin last represented Bangladesh during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 group stage and continues to be a vital player in the team's pace attack across formats. With the reset of the WTC cycle, Bangladesh relies on their senior fast bowler to spearhead the bowling attack in conditions that typically favor seamers early in Galle and Colombo.
The Bangladesh tour of Sri Lanka will commence with the first Test in Galle from June 17-21, followed by the second Test in Colombo from June 25-29. The ODIs are set for July 2, 5, and 8, while the T20Is will take place on July 10, 13, and 16.
If everything goes as planned, Taskin Ahmed's return could provide Bangladesh with the bowling reinforcement they need to start their new WTC campaign on a strong footing.
