Bengaluru, Nov 4 (NationPress) BJP leader and Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya has expressed significant concerns about the recently announced fare hike by the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), labeling it as exorbitant.

He highlighted that the ticket prices for the Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Nagpur Metro systems are nearly half for similar distances.

In a review meeting on Tuesday, Surya pointed out a critical calculation mistake made by BMRCL in deciding the base year for maintenance and administrative costs, which is essential for the Fare Fixation Committee’s report, as stated in the official release.

Surya noted that instead of utilizing the Maintenance and Administration cost of 2017-18, BMRCL mistakenly used the figures from 2016-17 when proposing the fare increase to the FFC.

This error has resulted in an unwarranted fare increase, causing commuters to pay around Rs 150 crore more than necessary since the fare adjustment.

He emphasized that while the average fare rise is 51.5 percent, the most frequent journeys taken by commuters (within the 8-15 km range) have experienced a shocking increase of nearly 70 percent.

In contrast, similar journeys in the Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, and Nagpur Metros charge around half the price of the Namma Metro tickets, he noted.

The MP has urged BMRCL to promptly correct the discrepancies in fare determination to prevent commuters from facing the consequences of flawed calculations.

He also requested comprehensive clarification from BMRCL regarding how this mistake happened and if any corrective actions are in progress.

BMRCL officials promised the MP that they would provide a formal response on the matter soon.

Surya reiterated the importance of keeping public transport affordable, transparent, and accountable, emphasizing that such errors undermine public trust in essential urban mobility systems like Namma Metro.

Point of View

The fare hike concerns raised by Tejasvi Surya reflect a broader issue of transparency in public transport pricing. It is crucial for urban mobility systems to maintain public trust, and any discrepancies in fare calculations can undermine that trust significantly. Addressing these issues promptly is essential for ensuring that urban transport remains accessible and reliable for all citizens.
