Los Angeles, April 28 (NationPress) Actor David Tennant has publicly confronted ‘Harry Potter’ author J.K. Rowling. The actor, known for his role in 2005’s ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’, shared his perspective on Rowling’s stance.
Tennant expressed his views during a Q&A session with a group of neurodivergent individuals, as reported by ‘Variety’.
According to ‘The Guardian’, during an appearance on ITV’s ‘The Assembly’, he stated, “J.K. Rowling is a remarkable author who has created incredible stories, and I wish her no ill will, but I hope society can allow individuals to be themselves. Just step back from interfering with others’ lives.”
In the same discussion, Tennant drew parallels between the current treatment of transgender individuals and a 1988 UK government policy that restricted local authorities from promoting homosexuality.
He remarked, “Looking back, we view that policy as a medieval absurdity, and I believe the current demonization of the transgender community mirrors that same injustice. It has become a political issue.”
‘Variety’ notes that Tennant is not the only former ‘Harry Potter’ actor distancing themselves from the controversial author.
After Rowling made a series of statements in 2020, suggesting that the existence of transgender individuals undermined the “lived reality of women,” prominent stars like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint issued statements contradicting her views.
Previously, Pedro Pascal criticized Rowling’s support for an anti-transgender ruling in the UK. The actor expressed his feelings towards Rowling’s comments regarding the April 16 ruling by the UK Supreme Court, which determined that transgender women should not be recognized as women under Britain’s Equality Act.
In an Instagram video, activist Tariq Ra'ouf highlighted Rowling’s involvement in the ruling, mentioning her financial backing of the campaign group For Women Scotland, which initiated the legal challenges, and called for a boycott of “Harry Potter-related” projects and experiences.
Ra'ouf also condemned Rowling’s recent post celebrating the ruling while enjoying a cigar and drink, saying, “I love it when a plan comes together. #SupremeCourt #WomensRights.”
In response, Pascal commented on the video, stating, “Awful disgusting behavior is exactly right. Heinous LOSER behavior.”
