Does Shashi Tharoor's Absence Matter? Sandeep Dikshit Weighs In
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 23 (NationPress) In light of recent reports indicating that Congress MP Shashi Tharoor might be discontented with Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, and could potentially miss a crucial meeting, party figure Sandeep Dikshit asserted on Friday that the absence of leaders who lack centrality to the party does not significantly impact its dynamics.
In a conversation with IANS, Dikshit remarked: "All the influential and senior leaders from Kerala are present for the meeting. Those who hold relevance for the Congress are attending. It doesn’t matter if leaders who are not pivotal figures or relevant to the party choose to stay away."
Earlier today, it was reported that Tharoor felt slighted by the party leadership due to what he interpreted as a lack of 'due respect' during Gandhi’s recent visit to Kochi. Sources cited by NDTV suggested that Tharoor was displeased after an incident where Gandhi allegedly overlooked him during a public engagement.
A viral video from the event appeared to show Gandhi recognizing several leaders while seemingly ignoring Tharoor. It was claimed that Gandhi also failed to mention Tharoor by name while greeting other senior officials, an act that reportedly did not sit well with the four-time MP representing Thiruvananthapuram.
The assembly of senior Congress leaders from Kerala was organized by party President Mallikarjun Kharge to strategize for the forthcoming Assembly elections in the state later this year. Those invited included state unit President Sunny Joseph, Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly V.D. Satheesan, and Congress Working Committee members Ramesh Chennithala and Tharoor, among others.
However, it seems Tharoor was not present at the meeting.
A former diplomat, Tharoor has recently been viewed as being in a precarious position with the Congress’s central leadership due to statements that seemed to commend Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling BJP. This includes comments regarding the Prime Minister’s management of the April 22 Pahalgam terror incident and subsequent military responses to Pakistan, along with critical remarks made through various media outlets.
Frictions between Tharoor and the Congress leadership have surfaced repeatedly, with the BJP often leveraging these differences to challenge the opposition party. The tension reportedly escalated last year when Tharoor supported the Modi administration’s actions post the Pahalgam terror incident and during Operation Sindoor, a position that contradicted the Congress’s official stance.
