New Delhi, Dec 3 (NationPress) The rise of fake news poses a significant threat to the integrity of democracy, asserted Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday, emphasizing the urgent need for the establishment of robust legal frameworks to combat AI-driven deepfakes in the nation.
While addressing the Lok Sabha, Vaishnaw highlighted the serious implications of social media and the proliferation of fake news.
“The menace of fake news jeopardizes India’s democratic framework and calls for stringent measures against misinformation and AI-generated deepfakes on social media platforms,” Vaishnaw stated.
He pointed out that the manner in which social media is utilized has fostered ecosystems that often disregard the Constitution of India and fail to adhere to laws set by Parliament, underscoring the immediate necessity for decisive action and the formulation of more stringent rules.
Recently, new regulations have been introduced, including a stipulation mandating the removal of unlawful content within thirty-six hours.
This legislation obligates intermediaries to eliminate or restrict access to content deemed illegal within 36 hours upon receiving “actual knowledge” of such content.
A draft regulation has also been made available for public consultation concerning the identification and management of AI-generated deepfakes.
The proposed amendments outline various requirements for online platforms and content creators, including compulsory labeling, user declarations, and platform verifications, among other obligations.
“Addressing the challenges posed by fake news and social media necessitates a careful balance between freedom of expression and safeguarding our democracy, and the Government is committed to handling this balance with utmost sensitivity,” remarked the Minister.
He acknowledged that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Digital India initiative has catalyzed transformative changes and democratized technology, the benefits of which must not be overlooked.
“While social media has indeed provided a voice to every citizen, the Government is dedicated to reinforcing institutions and the trust that forms the bedrock of our society,” the Minister concluded.
