Chennai, Nov 4 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) located in Chennai has issued a forecast predicting moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms affecting various regions of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Tuesday (November 4).
The bulletin from the centre indicated that while the northeast monsoon has officially commenced, its full effects are not yet being felt due to weak easterly winds and the ongoing influence of westerlies.
Based on the 24-hour rainfall data up to Monday morning, areas such as Malai in Ranipet district, Sethupattu in Tiruvannamalai district, and Valathi in Villupuram district recorded 3 cm of rainfall each.
A low-pressure system persists over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjacent Myanmar coast, expected to move toward the coasts of Bangladesh and Myanmar within the next 24 hours.
The RMC bulletin further communicated that moderate thunderstorms with lightning are anticipated in isolated areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Tuesday and Wednesday, with light rain expected to continue until November 11.
Maximum temperatures in some districts could rise by as much as 4 degrees Celsius above average, according to the forecast. In Chennai and surrounding areas, skies are likely to remain partly cloudy with light to moderate showers accompanied by thunder and lightning in select locations later in the day. The daytime heat is predicted to remain elevated due to limited moisture influx from the Bay.
Although the northeast monsoon has officially begun, meteorologists pointed out that the westerly wind pattern remains prevalent, and the easterly flow has yet to strengthen, resulting in sporadic and delayed rainfall across many regions.
However, the prevailing hot afternoons have led to convective rains during the evening and nighttime. Weather experts anticipate this pattern to continue until around November 12, after which the easterly winds are expected to strengthen, allowing the northeast monsoon to gain momentum across the state.
In the meantime, a tropical storm known as ‘Kalmaegi’ has emerged over the South China Sea near the Philippines and is progressing towards Thailand. Officials have clarified that this system will not significantly affect the northeast monsoon over Tamil Nadu.
