Justin Timberlake Takes Legal Action to Block Release of DWI Bodycam Footage
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, March 3 (NationPress) Pop sensation and actor Justin Timberlake has initiated legal proceedings to prevent the public release of the police body camera footage from his June 2024 arrest for driving while intoxicated (DWI).
The 45-year-old entertainer was apprehended on a DWI charge after departing from the American Hotel in New York in 2024. He faced one DWI charge alongside two citations: one for ignoring a stop sign and another for not maintaining his lane, according to reports from people.com.
Timberlake's attorney asserts that he was “not intoxicated” during the arrest. In September 2024, he accepted a plea agreement, where he admitted guilt to a lesser charge.
On March 2, the musician filed a petition in the Suffolk County Supreme Court, arguing that the release of the body camera footage would violate his privacy rights.
“The public release of this footage would cause significant and irreparable damage to (Timberlake’s) personal and professional image, subjecting him to public humiliation and harassment, and serves no valid public interest,” the petition stated.
Timberlake's legal team, consisting of Edward Burke Jr. and Michael J. Del Piano, contends that making the video public would reveal the interior of Timberlake's vehicle and disclose highly personal information unrelated to public oversight of governmental actions.
This petition arises after the Sag Harbor Village Police Department, Chief Rober Drake, and the Village of Sag Harbor received a request for the footage under the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL), as detailed in court documents.
The attorneys assert that disclosing this footage would unveil “intimate, private, and sensitive information regarding (Timberlake) and his family,” including medical and confidential data that does not serve to inform the public about governmental operations or official duties.
The singer's lawyers have requested the court to issue an “emergency stay” to prevent any disclosure of the bodycam footage.
They also sought an order prohibiting the release of the footage “in whole or in part” to any third party without a court directive, as reported by people.com.
Additionally, the legal team requested that Timberlake and/or the court be allowed to review the body-worn camera footage with suggested redactions to protect privacy interests. Their final ask is for any “other, further, and different relief” that the court may find appropriate.
