Kolkata, Nov 18 (NationPress) A widely circulated video on social media features a leader from the Trinamool Congress purportedly making a threatening remark about violence if the names of legitimate voters are eliminated from West Bengal’s electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) being conducted by the Election Commission.
The occurrence allegedly took place in Supur village of Bolpur in Birbhum district on Monday. Notably, Trinamool Congress MLA Chandranath Sinha was present at the party gathering where this contentious statement was uttered.
IANS has yet to independently authenticate the video and therefore cannot confirm its validity.
In the footage, local Trinamool leader Babu Das states, "The voter list in West Bengal is undergoing intensive revision. There is no issue with this process. However, if even one legitimate voter’s name is removed, there will be repercussions. If the Chief Minister issues the command, I will ensure they are cremated. The Ajay River is close by -- I will make BJP’s agents float in that river."
After this alarming remark, there was no reaction from Trinamool MLA Chandranath Sinha, who was seated on the stage during the meeting.
The BJP, in response, condemned the Trinamool Congress for allegedly threatening the opposition party with violence regarding the SIR exercise.
BJP's Bolpur district president Shyamapada Mandal remarked that the BJP will not remain passive. "TMC leaders are intimidating our members with violence. Do they believe we will remain silent? The SIR process is managed by the Election Commission. The BJP is not involved in this. The Trinamool Congress is politicizing the situation," he commented.
This is not the first instance of TMC leaders making threats towards the BJP or the Election Commission concerning this issue. The party's All-India general secretary Abhishek Banerjee had previously promised to organize a significant protest against the Election Commission, mobilizing one lakh individuals if names of legitimate voters were removed from Bengal's electoral rolls during the SIR exercise.
