Agartala, Sep 2 (NationPress) A member of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), part of the ruling BJP coalition in Tripura, reported being threatened by a group of unknown individuals at the MLAs' hostel located on the outskirts of the state capital. This alarming incident has prompted the police to initiate an investigation.
A senior police official indicated that a thorough inquiry is currently in progress, and they have nearly identified the three to four individuals associated with the incident that occurred on Monday night.
The MLA hostel, nestled within the New Capital Complex, is conveniently positioned near the State Secretariat, Legislative Assembly, and Tripura High Court.
TMP MLA Philip Kumar Reang asserted that he was confronted by three to four unidentified youths who threatened him at the hostel while he engaged in conversation with others outside his room on Monday night. He claimed that the youths appeared to be intoxicated.
Reang, who represents the Kanchanpur assembly constituency in North Tripura, expressed his concerns on Facebook, stating, "The new MLA Hostel is not secure for legislators. I was threatened around 10 PM on Monday by 3-4 unknown individuals, all of whom were drunk, right outside my room. Who is responsible for this security failure?"
A delegation of six MLAs met with Chief Minister Manik Saha at his office in the New Capital Complex on Tuesday, urging him to enhance the security measures at the MLA hostel.
Accompanying Reang in the delegation was Minister of State for Industries and Commerce Brishaketu Debbarma.
Debbarma remarked, "The incident at the MLA hostel Monday night poses a serious life-threatening situation for all legislators. The Chief Minister assured us that he would address this matter with the utmost seriousness."
Describing the event as a significant security breach, Reang urged the Chief Minister to take the matter seriously.
He recounted, "These unidentified individuals issued life-threatening threats against me, stating they would sever my head and bring 500 people to the MLA hostel next time. These individuals may have been visiting BJP MLA Promode Reang, who is also residing there."
Reang has filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the New Capital Complex police station, demanding appropriate action against those responsible.
Director General of Police Anurag, along with senior officials, visited the MLA hostel to evaluate the security protocols. He later confirmed that there was an altercation between MLA Philip Reang and the three to four unidentified individuals on Monday night. "The police are diligently working to identify those who threatened the MLA. Typically, only guests of the MLAs are permitted entry into the hostel. We are treating this incident with the utmost seriousness," the police chief stated.
The MLA hostel comprises 45 rooms, with 40 allocated to legislators from the BJP, TMP, CPI-M, and Congress.
