Chennai, Oct 18 (NationPress) The local police along with the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department have significantly enhanced safety protocols throughout the state as the festive season approaches. A total of over 26,000 personnel have been deployed to safeguard the public and avert any potential mishaps.
As per an official announcement, approximately 18,000 police officers from various divisions—including law enforcement, crime, traffic, armed reserve, special police, and home guard—are stationed in key commercial and residential areas. These elevated security measures will be active until October 22, encompassing the entire Deepavali celebration period.
In Chennai, the police have set up 16 temporary watchtowers to oversee crowd activity—eight in T Nagar, four in Kilpauk, and two each in Washermenpet and Flower Bazaar. Additionally, four temporary control rooms have been established at T Nagar, Purasawalkam, Washermenpet, and Flower Bazaar to facilitate real-time monitoring and crowd management.
To combat petty crime during the festive season, plainclothes officers are present in crowded marketplaces to monitor pickpockets and repeat offenders. Moreover, the city police have implemented drone surveillance and facial recognition technology in areas with high foot traffic to bolster security measures.
The Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department has deployed 8,000 firefighters statewide, which includes 43 fire stations within Chennai's city limits. As a safety precaution, 24 additional fire engines and 50 Metro water tankers have been strategically positioned across the capital.
Officials are conducting fire safety inspections in shopping malls, residential neighborhoods, and cracker manufacturing units. Emergency response teams, including 108 ambulances and fire trucks, are on standby in densely populated regions to respond to any emergencies.
Mobile X-ray baggage scanners have also been installed in major shopping centers to improve security checks.
Authorities have urged the public to comply with safety guidelines and assist them during the festive period. “Our teams are dedicated to ensuring a safe and joyous celebration for everyone,” stated a senior police officer.
