New Year's Eve Security: 25,000 Officers, Drones, and CCTV in Chennai

Chennai, Dec 31 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu Police have mobilized 25,000 officers outfitted with drones and CCTV surveillance to uphold law and order during the New Year's Eve festivities in Chennai and its adjoining regions.
These security measures include officers from the Greater Chennai Police (GCP), Tambaram, and Avadi city police. Out of the total personnel, 19,000 police officers, along with 1,500 Home Guards, will be positioned within GCP jurisdiction. Both Tambaram and Avadi city police will each have 3,000 officers on duty.
Vigilance will be heightened in coastal areas, including Marina, Santhome, Elliots, and Neelankarai beaches within Chennai, as well as Panaiyur and Kovalam in Tambaram.
The authorities have banned the use of firecrackers in all areas, including public and residential spaces. Additionally, the use of loudspeakers in residential zones and apartments is restricted and requires prior approval from the police and relevant authorities.
According to a statement from Greater Chennai Police, checkpoints have been established at over 500 locations across the jurisdictions of Chennai, Tambaram, and Avadi city police.
Furthermore, 425 vehicle inspection teams have been deployed in Tambaram to oversee traffic and curb violations.
A total of 37 teams will be conducting checks for drunk driving and preventing illegal bike racing. Road safety teams will patrol the streets on two-wheelers to assist the public and promote safety awareness.
The Tambaram city police have formed 15 monitoring teams in areas such as ECR, OMR, and GST roads to deter bike racing.
Temporary Police Assistance Booths will be placed in sandy areas, while security reinforcements and drone surveillance will provide additional vigilance.
The Tamil Nadu Police Department, Coast Guard, and Marina Beach Lifeguards have put in place security protocols, including the installation of warning boards in areas adjacent to beaches.
Ambulances with medical personnel will remain on standby near major gathering points.
This significant deployment follows criticism directed at the Tamil Nadu Police regarding law and order issues earlier this year.
The murder of K. Armstrong, the president of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and a notable Dalit leader, on July 5, 2024, shocked the state.
Public backlash against Chennai city police also arose following the killings of history-sheeters, including Thiruvengadam, who was implicated in Armstrong's murder case.
