Chennai, Dec 25 (NationPress) The Greater Chennai Police (GCP) have implemented robust security measures for the Christmas festivities throughout the city, with approximately 8,000 police personnel assigned to manage crowds and ensure public safety at various locations, including churches, beaches, and significant public gathering areas.

As per police officials, the security arrangements commenced from Christmas Eve, anticipating a significant influx of visitors to churches. Officers are working in shifts to oversee crowd management and uphold law and order during the holiday season.

Additionally, volunteers from the Tamil Nadu Home Guards are supporting the police with crowd control and other security duties.

Chennai boasts nearly 350 churches, many attracting large crowds during the Christmas celebrations. Special attention will be directed towards prominent churches such as Santhome Church in Mylapore, the Velankanni shrine in Besant Nagar, St Antony’s Church in Parrys, and St George’s Cathedral on RK Salai. Police officers, including those in plain clothes, will be deployed at these sites to monitor crowds, prevent pickpocketing, and mitigate incidents of eve-teasing and other anti-social behaviors.

Beyond physical presence, the city police have augmented electronic surveillance during this festive period. Dedicated teams are actively monitoring CCTV footage from crowded locations, including churches, beaches, and commercial districts.

Moreover, the police drone unit has been activated to conduct aerial surveillance and meticulously observe crowd movements in sensitive areas. Popular public venues such as Marina Beach and Elliot’s Beach are expected to attract substantial crowds during Christmas and the holiday season.

To ensure public safety, police teams will patrol the beaches using All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) and will strictly prohibit individuals from entering the sea. Additional officers will be positioned along the shoreline to promptly address any emergencies and enforce safety regulations.

The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) have also devised special measures to manage vehicular movement throughout the celebrations. Traffic diversions, parking provisions, and increased personnel will be deployed near churches and other crowded locales to alleviate congestion and ensure smooth traffic flow. The police have urged the public to cooperate with security measures, follow safety guidelines, and contribute to a peaceful and joyous Christmas celebration across Chennai.
