12 Individuals Detained in Aizawl for Ignoring Firecracker Ban During New Year Celebrations

Aizawl, Jan 1 (NationPress) A total of 12 individuals were apprehended and 13 incidents reported in Mizoram's Aizawl district for disregarding the government's prohibition against firecracker usage to ring in the New Year on Wednesday, officials revealed.

A police representative stated that the apprehensions and case registrations were due to the unauthorized use and detonation of firecrackers and associated pyrotechnic devices.

For further inquiry, 23 cases were identified by various police stations within the district.

Comprehensive reports concerning the breach of government restrictions on firecrackers from other regions are pending, the official noted.

Thanks to the government's directives, the use of firecrackers in Aizawl city was nearly negligible compared to previous years, the official mentioned.

The state government had previously banned firecrackers, sky lanterns, and other pyrotechnic items to ensure an environmentally friendly celebration of Christmas and New Year.

Community leaders and multiple civil society organizations had previously urged everyone to refrain from using or setting off fireworks during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Law enforcement also deployed several drones across different police station jurisdictions to oversee firecracker usage on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Footage captured by the drones is being scrutinized, and further identification of those violating the prohibitory order on firecrackers will lead to subsequent legal actions,” stated a police action report.

Since Tuesday midnight, New Year festivities have been celebrated with zeal and excitement across the predominantly Christian state of Mizoram, with various organizations and clubs hosting events.

Numerous churches across the state conducted customary worship services, prayers, and congregational singing as part of the New Year celebrations.

The Presbyterian Church of India, the Baptist Church of Mizoram, among others, plan to host community feasts on Thursday to conclude the New Year celebrations.

All churches in the state held midnight services on Tuesday to welcome the New Year.

For the past fortnight, Mizoram has been immersed in a festive atmosphere leading up to Christmas, the state's principal annual celebration.
