The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested Vishal Paul, also known as Gopal Das, in connection with its probe into the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker Avijit Sarkar, who was killed during post-poll violence following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. Paul was apprehended by CBI officers from Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district, where he had reportedly been evading arrest for an extended period.

Officials confirmed that Vishal Paul had been absconding for a long time before his arrest. This follows the CBI's detention last week of another accused, Arup Das, who was picked up from Assam. The back-to-back arrests signal a renewed push by the agency to close the net on remaining fugitives in the case.

Charges Framed Against 19 Accused

On 1 July this year, a special CBI court in Kolkata framed charges against 19 accused in the Sarkar murder case. Among those charged were former Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator Pares Paul and former Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) councillor Swapan Samaddar, both of whom had faced repeated questioning by the CBI. The agency's additional chargesheet named a total of 20 accused, including the erstwhile officer-in-charge and a lady sub-inspector of Kankurgachi Police Station, who were also arrested.

Avijit Sarkar, a BJP worker from the Kankurgachi area in North Kolkata, was allegedly tortured and killed by TMC activists shortly after the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election results were declared. His family lodged a complaint, prompting the Narkeldanga Police Station to initiate an investigation and file a chargesheet against 15 people. The Calcutta High Court subsequently ordered the CBI to take over the probe, which expanded the scope of the investigation significantly.

During bail proceedings, the court raised pointed questions about how society could function if those entrusted with law enforcement played the roles of perpetrators — a reference to the police personnel named in the chargesheet.
