How did a school bus tragedy claim the lives of two toddlers in Bengaluru?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Feb 11 (NationPress) A tragic accident unfolded in Bengaluru's Thanisandra locality on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of two toddlers after they were run over by a school bus. This incident has sparked significant outrage across social media platforms following the release of CCTV footage.
The unfortunate event transpired near the police quarters within the jurisdiction of the Hennur Traffic Police Station. The victims have been identified as Varsha (2) and Bhanu (4).
Reports from the police indicate that the children were riding on a scooter with Naganagouda, a constable originating from Yadgir. He was en route to purchase milk, accompanied by his daughter Varsha and his elder brother’s daughter Bhanu.
During school hours, a private bus was on its way to pick up students. Upon noticing the approaching bus, Naganagouda halted his scooter to allow it to pass. However, as the bus took a U-turn, it reportedly collided with the stationary scooter. The collision caused the children to fall onto the roadway, and the rear wheel of the bus tragically ran over them.
The injured children were rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to severe injuries and heavy bleeding. Naganagouda sustained only minor injuries from the crash.
Initial investigations have revealed that the bus driver had previously been involved in a minor accident with an autorickshaw and was allegedly driving recklessly. Authorities indicated that the driver failed to see the halted scooter and crashed into it.
“I was on my way to get milk and had traveled about 200 meters. Upon noticing the school bus, I stopped to let it pass, believing the driver would see us. Unfortunately, he turned towards my scooter and hit it. If he had only slowed down and stopped, my two children would still be alive,” Naganagouda lamented.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) for the North Division visited the scene for inspection. The Hennur traffic police have taken the bus driver into custody and are currently questioning him. An official case has been opened, and further inquiries are ongoing.
The remains of the two children have been sent to Yelahanka Government Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Family members gathered at the hospital, expressing their profound grief as they mourned the loss of the young lives.
