Why are Traders in Pakistan's Balochistan Holding a Strike Over Kidnappings?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Quetta, Jan 29 (NationPress) In a significant show of unity, traders organized a shutter-down strike across the regions of Gwadar, Panjgur, and Turbat in Balochistan, Pakistan, protesting the escalating lawlessness and alarming kidnapping incidents. A coalition of prominent political factions and diverse community representatives, including business leaders, participated in this demonstration, as reported by local media on Thursday.
On Wednesday, both large and small businesses, along with financial institutions, remained closed in solidarity for a businessman from Turbat. An unidentified group of armed individuals had abducted Shah Nawaz Gul Rind in December, as noted by Pakistan's leading daily, Dawn. The kidnappers allegedly demanded a ransom of 600 million PKR for Rind's release.
In response to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the business tycoon, the All Parties Alliance called for a shutter-down strike across three districts in Makran - Gwadar, Panjgur, and Turbat. The alliance, along with local residents, urged government officials and law enforcement to take swift action to secure Rind's release and apprehend the kidnappers.
This coalition includes major political entities such as the National Party, Balochistan National Party (BNP), Pakistan Peoples Party, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and others. Alliance leaders declared their protests would persist until Rind and other abducted individuals are recovered.
On January 18, hundreds of locals, including political activists and traders, participated in a large-scale protest rally in Panjgur against the rising trend of kidnappings for ransom affecting both traders and ordinary citizens, alongside the deteriorating security conditions in the area.
The demonstration was organized at the behest of the All Parties Citizen Action Committee of Makran (APCAM) to address the abduction of prominent local figure Gul Jan Rind and several others in Panjgur, according to Dawn. Protesters gathered at Main Bismillah Chowk in Panjgur, parading with placards and banners highlighting their demands and voicing anti-government sentiments.
Leading the rally were APCACM Chairman Nawab Shambay Zai, BNP leader Mir Nazir Ahmed Baloch, acting president of the National Party Mujiib Rehman, JUI Panjgur leader Hafiz Muhammad Azam Baloch, Haq Do Tehreek Panjgur leader Mullah Farhad, Jamaat-i-Islami leader Maulvi Noor, PML-N leader Ashraf Sagat, and PPP Panjgur leader Javed Baloch.
Protest leaders called upon the government and law enforcement to undertake urgent measures for the safe return of Shah Nawaz Gul and others who have been kidnapped. They raised concerns regarding the inability of law enforcement to track the victim's mobile number despite the availability of modern technology. Immediate action was demanded to detain those responsible for the abductions.
