Patna, Oct 27 (NationPress) A devastating event unfolded in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district when four young children tragically drowned in a water pit while bathing on Monday.
The unfortunate incident took place around 11 AM in Navtoliya village, located under the Ismailpur police station area of Naugachhia sub-division.
According to local authorities, a group of six children from Chattu Tola ventured into a water pit that had accumulated water due to the recent floods from the Ganga River.
While two managed to escape unharmed, four children drowned one after another.
The victims have been identified as Prince Kumar (10), son of Mithilesh Kumar, and Nandan Kumar (10), son of Kishori Mandal, both from Chattu Singh Tola. The identities of the other two children remain unknown.
Local villagers and divers retrieved the children from the pit and rushed them to the Ismailpur primary health centre, where medical personnel pronounced them dead.
This heartbreaking occurrence has cast a shadow over the village, coinciding with the ongoing Chhath festivities in the area.
Upon notification, the Ismailpur SHO and his team arrived at the scene, managed the situation, and sent the bodies for post-mortem examinations at the Naugachhia sub-divisional hospital.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident.
“The pits in the vicinity are filled with Ganga water due to recent flooding. The children entered one without realizing how deep it was. The pit was muddy and slippery, making it difficult for them to escape,” stated the SHO.
“We await the post-mortem results for the deceased and are gathering statements from the survivors,” the SHO added.
A crowd of villagers gathered at the site, mourning the loss.
Earlier, on Sunday, two teenage girls drowned in a river near Ayaar village under the Agiaon Bazaar police station in Bhojpur district.
The victims were identified as Samrajiya Khatoon (14) and Ashmin Khatoon (15), both close friends from the same village.
According to an official, the girls slipped and fell into deep water while washing clothes.
A local girl witnessed the incident and raised the alarm, prompting villagers to rush to the scene.
Despite their best efforts, they could only recover the bodies.
