Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 16 (NationPress) In a heartbreaking incident, four family members tragically drowned in the Bharathapuzha River on Thursday. The victims have been identified as Kabir (47), proprietor of Cheruthuruthy Sara Bakery; his wife, Rehana (36), a Cheruthuruthy resident; their 10-year-old daughter, Sara; and Sanu (Fuad), Rehana's 12-year-old nephew.

The unfortunate event transpired as the two children were taking a bath in the river and were suddenly swept away by a strong underwater current. In a desperate attempt to save the children, Kabir and Rehana jumped in but were also engulfed by the turbulent waters.

The incident occurred at the Painkulam cremation ghat along the Bharathapuzha River. Local residents, along with fire and rescue services, were able to rescue Rehana and transport her to Jeevodaya Hospital in Chelakkara, but sadly, she could not be revived.

Rescue teams later recovered the bodies of Kabir, Sara, and Sanu, with the assistance of local residents and police. The Bharathapuzha River, also known as the Nila River, flows through regions of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Spanning a length of 209 km, it ranks as the second-longest river in Kerala, following the Periyar. This river has played an essential role in shaping the culture and life of the South Malabar region, historically referred to as Peraar.

As an interstate river, the Bharathapuzha serves as a crucial water resource for communities across four administrative districts: Malappuram and Palakkad, and parts of the Palakkad-Thrissur district border in Kerala, as well as Coimbatore and Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu. The fertile Thrissur-Ponnani Kole Wetlands, an important ecological area, lies along its banks.
