Kolkata, Sep 13 (NationPress) A third-year female student from Jadavpur University in West Bengal has tragically lost her life due to drowning, as indicated by the preliminary autopsy report.
However, the report does not clarify if she was under the influence of alcohol at the time.
Authorities are currently awaiting the viscera report, which will take additional time to process, to ascertain if any narcotic substances or toxins were in her system when she drowned.
According to the initial findings, there were no apparent injuries noted on her body.
Sources reveal that the student was reportedly drinking with friends by a pond on campus. They later expressed a desire to enter the water, and during police questioning, the friends stated they cautioned her against swimming, as she was not a proficient swimmer.
Despite their warnings, she entered the pond, believing it to be shallow. Unfortunately, she quickly lost her footing and began to drown, as per the report.
Her friends attempted to rescue her and called for assistance. Security personnel were notified, but upon arrival at the hospital, she was pronounced dead.
The police noted, "The true circumstances leading to her drowning will be determined once the viscera report is available. The preliminary findings indicate death by drowning."
In response to this heartbreaking incident, Jadavpur University has intensified security measures and enforced stricter regulations for students and visitors.
A circular issued late Friday night prohibits trespassing, early morning and evening walks, and the use of narcotics or alcohol on campus, along with requiring valid identification for entry.
The victim was a third-year student studying English Literature. Her body was retrieved shortly after 10 p.m. on Thursday, during a cultural event hosted by the Students' Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the CPI(M).
Although the cultural event was halted immediately following the news of her passing, concerns have been raised about the approval for the event to continue beyond 10 p.m.
After the recovery of her body, it was promptly transported to the nearby K.P.C. Medical College and Hospital, where she was declared deceased.
