Kolkata, Sep 16 (NationPress) Following the tragic incident involving the death of a female student, whose body was discovered in a pond, the authorities at Jadavpur University have announced plans to fence off water bodies within the campus to avert similar occurrences in the future, as stated on Tuesday.
This decision was reached during an administrative meeting held on Monday at Jadavpur University. The meeting underscored the need for heightened security measures across the campus.
JU Pro Vice Chancellor Amitava Datta remarked: "A committee is being established to formulate regulations concerning the rules and restrictions for various university events. The university administration will ensure compliance with these guidelines. Additionally, there is a pressing need to bolster the number of security personnel on campus. The fencing of water bodies has also been agreed upon."
He further mentioned that the university is currently awaiting the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor. "The execution of these decisions and the convening of executive meetings will depend on the appointment of the Vice Chancellor. Once appointed, we can swiftly address the vacant positions within the university," Datta added.
On the evening of September 11, the body of a female student was retrieved from a water body located within the Jadavpur University grounds. The victim was a third-year student pursuing English Literature.
In the aftermath of this unfortunate incident, Jadavpur University has tightened security protocols and introduced several restrictions for students and visitors. The university administration has prohibited trespassing, morning and evening walks, as well as the consumption of narcotics and alcohol on campus. Entry is now permitted only with valid identification.
According to the preliminary post-mortem report, the student’s death was attributed to drowning. However, the initial autopsy has yet to ascertain whether she was under the influence of alcohol.
Authorities are awaiting the viscera report, which will clarify if any drugs or toxic substances were present in her system at the time of the drowning.
Furthermore, a murder investigation has been initiated following the student's death, with a case filed at the Jadavpur police station based on a complaint from the victim's father.
Seven students from the university are currently under scrutiny by investigators. The Kolkata Police have summoned these students for questioning and are also reviewing the deceased student's mobile phone.
