Kolkata, Sep 15 (NationPress) A murder case has been filed concerning the enigmatic death of a Jadavpur University student. The complaint was officially lodged at the Jadavpur police station by the father of the deceased.
On Monday morning, the grieving parents first visited Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters, to meet with Police Commissioner Manoj Verma. They then proceeded to the Jadavpur Police Station to formally submit their complaint.
In a statement to the media, the father expressed, "My daughter has a fear of darkness. She would never venture alone to the water body unless someone invited her. It's possible that she was coerced or lured there. She had no swimming skills, making it unlikely she would fall into the water intentionally."
Currently, seven Jadavpur University students are under investigation. The Kolkata Police summoned these students for questioning yesterday, with three already having provided statements. The remaining students will be interrogated later this week.
According to police sources, the individuals who first rescued the student from the water were her close friends, making it essential to speak with them. The police are also analyzing the mobile phone of the deceased.
Investigators are scrutinizing call logs to identify contacts made by the student before the incident.
On the night of September 11, a female student’s body was discovered in a water body located within the Jadavpur University campus. The victim was a third-year student specializing in English Literature. The body was retrieved shortly after 10 PM, coinciding with a cultural event held by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the CPI(M).
The cultural program was halted immediately after the news broke about the body’s recovery. The student was rushed to K.P.C. Medical College and Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
In response to this tragic incident, Jadavpur University has tightened security measures and enacted various restrictions for students and visitors. A circular was issued late Friday night, prohibiting trespassing, morning and evening walks, and the use of narcotics and alcohol on campus. Entry will now require valid identification.
The initial post-mortem report indicated that the student died from drowning, but it remains unclear if she was under the influence of substances at the time. Authorities are awaiting the viscera report, which will clarify if any drugs or toxins were present.
Nonetheless, the preliminary autopsy findings revealed no visible injuries on the body.
