Kolkata, Sep 14 (NationPress) In response to the tragic incident involving the untimely death of a female student at Jadavpur University, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has proactively reached out to Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma. They have requested an action taken report within a three-day timeframe.
In a late Saturday night social media update, the NCW stated, "The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognizance of a concerning media report titled 'Woman Student Found Dead Inside Jadavpur University,' where a 21-year-old third-year student from the English department was discovered deceased in a lake located on the university grounds."
The Commission has called for a comprehensive and unbiased investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident, alongside an evaluation of the university administration's responsibility for maintaining campus safety.
According to Hon'ble Chairperson Smt. Vijaya Rahatkar, a letter has been dispatched to the Kolkata Police Commissioner, urging for a thorough investigation, forensic analysis, and post-mortem report. An inquiry into the university authorities' role in campus safety is also sought. If foul play is detected, swift action will be demanded, and regular updates to the victim's family are expected. The NCW has emphasized the need for a detailed Action Taken Report within three days.
The deceased was a third-year student studying English Literature and her body was found in a water body on the Jadavpur University campus late on the evening of September 11. While the body was recovered shortly after 10 p.m., a cultural event hosted by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) was taking place on campus at the time.
Upon learning about the recovery of the student’s body, the cultural event was halted immediately. She was transported to the nearby K.P.C. Medical College and Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
In the wake of this incident, Jadavpur University authorities have tightened campus security and implemented several restrictions for both students and visitors.
A circular released late on Friday night prohibits trespassing, morning and evening walks, the use of narcotics and alcohol on campus, and mandates entry through valid identification.
Preliminary findings from the post-mortem examination indicate the student died by drowning. However, the initial autopsy does not clarify whether she was under the influence of alcohol at the time.
The police are currently awaiting the viscera report, which will assist in determining if any drugs or toxic substances were present in her system during the drowning incident.
Notably, the initial autopsy report indicated that no visible injuries were found on the body.
