Vapi, July 1 (NationPress) A tragic incident occurred when a worker lost his life and eight others sustained injuries due to the collapse of an iron shed at a plastic manufacturing facility in Umargam, located in the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation area of Vapi, on Tuesday.

Among the injured, three workers are reported to be in critical condition.

Initial investigations indicate that the collapse may have been caused by the unsafe stacking of bags filled with plastic granules on the roof of the shed, pointing to a significant breach of safety regulations.

Emergency services and the Fire Department quickly arrived at the scene following the report of the incident.

Rescue operations commenced promptly, enabling the extraction of trapped workers, including Manmahendra Das, Shubham Kuswah, Amarnath Saroj, Shubh Lad, Surendra Beheria, Sajid Khan, Vikas Chaudhary, and Bhavin Joshi.

Sadly, Bhavin Joshi succumbed to his injuries.

The injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.

Police Inspector Chaudhary, along with a team from the Umargam Police Station, has begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

Officials have stated that the weight of the plastic bags placed on the shed, in conjunction with the recent winds and monsoon rains, likely contributed to the structural failure.

An official inquiry is currently underway.

Earlier this year, in February 2025, two workers lost their lives in a scaffolding collapse at a textile unit in Surat. Industrial zones such as Vapi, Ankleshwar, Dahej, and Rajkot have witnessed a series of structural collapses, fires, and gas leaks, often attributed to inadequate maintenance and negligence regarding safety protocols.

In the past five years, Gujarat has experienced over 300 industrial accidents, particularly in hotspots like Vapi, Ankleshwar, Dahej, Hazira, Vatva, and Naroda GIDC.

According to Labour Department statistics, between 2020 and 2024, over 180 workers have died, and more than 800 have been injured in incidents involving structural failures, fires, chemical leaks, and machinery breakdowns.

Point of View

It is crucial to highlight the ongoing issues surrounding safety in industrial zones. This incident reflects a broader trend of negligence that jeopardizes workers' lives. We must advocate for stricter regulations and enforce compliance to ensure the safety of all employees in various sectors.
