Investigation Launched After Undertrial Prisoner Commits Suicide in Mathura Jail
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mathura, March 26 (NationPress) An undertrial inmate at a district prison in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura tragically took his own life, reportedly due to distress from not being granted bail, according to officials on Thursday.
The inmate, identified as Suresh, a resident of Govardhan, had been incarcerated since May 2025 on charges related to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 (NDPS Act).
The incident unfolded around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday when Suresh left the barracks to use the restroom but failed to return after an extended period.
After about ten minutes, the constables on duty became concerned and proceeded to check on him.
Upon opening the restroom door, they discovered Suresh hanging from the latch, allegedly using his lower garment as a noose.
Shocked by the scene, the prison staff quickly brought him down and rushed him to the prison hospital for immediate medical attention.
Due to his critical state, doctors transferred him to the district hospital.
Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, Suresh passed away during treatment early Thursday morning, confirmed officials.
Mathura Jail Superintendent Anshuman Garg stated that initial reports indicate Suresh had been experiencing significant mental distress stemming from delays in securing bail.
His family had also approached the Allahabad High Court for assistance, but his case could not be scheduled for a hearing even on March 24.
“Prior to the incident, he spoke with his father over the phone and expressed profound frustration about his circumstances,” Garg mentioned, adding that all aspects of the incident are under review.
The event has caused alarm among jail authorities, prompting senior officials to urgently assess the situation.
Authorities have launched a formal investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding Suresh's suicide and to identify any potential lapses in his supervision or care.
Further actions will be determined based on the investigation's findings.
