Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 28 (NationPress) The All India Trinamool Congress has put forth four candidates for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections, igniting a flurry of responses from various political factions.
The party announced the nominations of Babul Supriyo, Rajeev Kumar, Menaka Guruswamy, and Koel Mallick via its social media platforms, congratulating them and expressing hopes that they will continue the party's legacy of resilience and dedication to protecting the rights and dignity of every citizen in India.
On Saturday, Trinamool MLA Asit Mazumdar characterized the announcement as merely a preview of a larger strategy.
“This is just the beginning — the complete picture is yet to be revealed. This serves as Mamata Banerjee’s introduction; the true narrative is still to come. What unfolds next will be witnessed by the people of Bengal and India,” he shared with IANS.
In response, BJP leader Dilip Ghosh remarked, “The selection of candidates by TMC is entirely their prerogative. However, individuals like Rajeev Kumar, who have been instrumental in assisting Mamata Banerjee with governance and supported her during challenging times, were destined for recognition.”
Among the candidates, Babul Supriyo, who joined Trinamool in 2021, is currently a minister in the Mamata Banerjee Cabinet. Rajeev Kumar is a former Director General of Police, having also served as Commissioner of Kolkata Police.
Menaka Guruswamy is a distinguished advocate at the Supreme Court, while Koel Mallick is a renowned figure in the Bengali film industry.
The Election Commission has confirmed that voting for 37 Rajya Sabha seats across multiple states, including West Bengal, will take place on March 16.
Within the 294-member West Bengal Assembly, Trinamool boasts an effective strength of 218 MLAs, enhanced by support from several Opposition members who have switched allegiance without formally resigning.
This grants the ruling party a significant majority to ensure the election of four Rajya Sabha members. In comparison, the BJP’s representation has decreased from their 2021 peak of 77 seats to approximately 65, affected by resignations, defections, deaths, and defeats in bypolls.
