Agartala, April 14 (NationPress) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha stated on Monday that the foundational ideas of the Constitution's chief architect, B. R. Ambedkar, were acknowledged much later than they should have been. However, the BJP government is dedicated to adhering to the principles he established, particularly for the betterment of the backward and poor.

On Monday, Tripura, along with the entire nation, honored Ambedkar on his 134th birth anniversary.

With heartfelt tributes and calls to uphold his values, the Chief Minister pointed out that the contributions of the Constitution's architect were recognized much later than warranted.

“Our government is devoted to following the path laid out by Ambedkar, especially concerning the upliftment of the backward and poor,” stated Saha during the main event at Ujjayanta Palace.

The Chief Minister praised Ambedkar’s journey from a disadvantaged and socially marginalized background to becoming one of the most revered figures in Indian history, serving as a beacon of hope and determination for future generations.

He recalled that Ambedkar, despite facing immense discrimination, played an essential role in drafting the Constitution and was the first Law Minister of Independent India.

“Yet, it was only in 1990 that he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna,” he added.

Reiterating his government’s commitment to Ambedkar’s vision, the Chief Minister emphasized various welfare initiatives being executed in Tripura, such as free education, scholarships, stipends, hostel accommodations, and other programs aimed at empowering poor and marginalized students and youths.

He also mentioned the bronze statue of Ambedkar erected in front of the state Assembly in December last year as part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ initiative.

During the function, Scheduled Caste Welfare and Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das commended Ambedkar’s relentless work for social justice and equality.

Das further accused the Congress and Left parties of “exploiting Ambedkar’s legacy for political advantage.”

The Minister questioned their opposition to the Waqf (Amendment) Act passed by the Modi government, labeling it a case of political appeasement under the guise of constitutional protection.

“The Constitution clearly advocates for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), yet when the Modi government advances this initiative, these parties protest under the pretense of defending the Constitution,” he stated.

He also expressed strong objections to recent events in West Bengal, questioning whether such protests, which disrespected the national flag and involved individuals carrying Palestinian flags, were appropriate.

Criticizing the opposition parties, Das remarked that those claiming to be custodians of the Constitution often overlook the fundamental duties it mandates for every citizen.
